Pohamba and Swapo party re-elected in Namibia election

Profile: Hifikepunye Pohamba Namibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba has been re-elected for a second term after winning 76.4% of the vote in last week's poll, official results show. Mr Pohamba's governing Swapo party got 74% of the parliamentary vote, maintaining its two-thirds majority. Eight of 13 opposition parties that took part in the vote have vowed to contest the results in court, alleging voting and counting irregularities. The groups say counting was very slow, permitting widespread vote rigging. African observer missions have pronounced the elections held on 27-28 November as largely free and fair. The main opposition Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) party, led by Hidipo Hamutenya, won 11.3% of the vote, results showed. Two years ago, the party broke away from Swapo, which has dominated Namibia's politics since the country gained independence in 1990 after a long struggle against rule by South Africa. BBC
